Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2012 Designed by Herzog & de Meuron and Ai Weiwei

0
When visiting London recently at the Serpentine Gallery the annual pavilion designed by Herzog & de Meuron and Ai Weiwei was going on, this trio were also responsible for designing the Beijing Olympic Stadium for the 2008 Olympic games, while in London I didn't manage to see the games but this was a good enough substitute...

The idea behind this years pavilion is based on unearthing and reliving past pavilions that have stood in the same place over the last 12 years outside the Serpentine Gallery in London. As you enter you descend almost instantly into carvings of previous pavilion plans and layouts that create a visual and physical palimpsest of differing angles, grooves and unusual shapes which allow users to fit their bodies in amongst the varying crossovers between different buildings this physical monument to the past. The roof which lies just above the ground is comprised of a shallow spherical disk filled with water, reflecting back the London sky above it just as the cork employed beneath illustrates the history that lies beneath this wonderfully poetic pavilion.
